Sebastian had a crush from afar on cheerleader Darcy, but now that he has come out as a trans boy named DJ, Sebastian finds he is still intrigued and attracted. But being openly trans in an Alabama high school is not easy, and as the two boys become friends and then lovers, the threat of violence is always present.
I really liked what J.R. Gray was trying to do, but D.J. and Sebastian's voices were so similar that I frequently had to check back to the chapter heading to see who was narrating. And Sebastian's habit of using “malaphors” (mixed metaphors) and imitating various memes was more annoying than amusing.
In the end, I wanted to like this book more than I did, but I'm very glad that it exists.
