In my review for Steelheart, I said that this book was like a good action film, nice and fun, but it was nothing too deep, and had some plot holes the closer you looked at it. I still stick by that assumption, and I think that holds true for this book as well, not to mention the series as a whole. The characters do get more development, and the action scenes are written well, but I just can't shake the problems that this book had. More on that later.
One of the major strengths of this book is that the characters get to shine through in their dialogue and their backstory. Here, we see David interact with all of these people and they all have great writing for both how they speak and what they say. We also learn a lot about different people in here, and it really adds depth to them that their first novel just seemed to lack. I liked all of the nice quips he had with all of them, especially him and Megan, as their relationship began to grow in this book. The action scenes are also written well, though, perhaps that this was just because I had come to care for the characters so much that I didn't notice anything wrong with it, being so wrapped up in the story.
Another strength that this novel has is taking you to see so many different superpowered people and locations. Sanderson has said that he would like to visit this world again someday, and I would totally welcome it, given the interesting locations that Sanderson writes. His imagination knows no bounds!
And know we get to the negative. And let me just say that I found the ending to be a bit rushed, and left me asking questions, and not the good ones either. Like, why does David get his powers at the very end, and not earlier or later on? What is the group Calamity is working for? And what makes a person get certain powers, and not others? . While I won't spoil it, I will say that I found the villain after Prof to be rushed, and left me with more questions than answers, although I do like the Epilogue. I must say that that last scene had me tearing up at the end.
Overall, I'd call each of these books great action movies. They have good characters, and excellently done action, but don't think about their world too hard, or your brain might hurt.I give Calamity a four out of five.
