Sometimes you just come across a book that checks all the boxes that you love and despite what others think, you love it. Cloud Cuckoo Land was a wonderfully weaving story, with lush descriptive language - the kind that makes me want to savour the words and drift into the atmosphere Doerr creates with them. That being said, if descriptive and lyrical prose is not your thing, then this might not be for you, as I've seen other reviewers say.
For me though, the writing combined with an interweaving and connected story that champions the power of stories and books to connect us was an absolute delight. I loved it much more than All the Light We Cannot See, although I can see some similarities in how Doerr writes between the two and what I loved in ATLWCS is amplified here, and I enjoyed it so much more in the context of this story.
Bearing in mind that I absolutely LOVE books that are odes to books and stories, this already had a clear one up for me, but if the execution had failed, I wouldn't champion it as much, but luckily that is not the case here. Doerr deftly combines character storytelling with hints of sci-fi, environmentalism and a love of stories and if your attention span can handle it, the slow unspooling of these themes is worth getting to the end for. I really loved it start to finish!
