Karen Docter is a new author to me. I'm always skeptical when I read a book from a “new to me” author, but Karen Docter didn't disappoint! First off thank you to NetGalley and Romance Conventions for my advanced copy of Cop at Her Doorstep.
The characters were really compelling it made it easier to relate and fall in love with them. I might be the only one but my favorite character was actually Eric Carries son. I love how that both Jake and Carrie fell in love with each other but never stopped doing things to make Eric included. I also think that Eric's attachment to Jake made it easier and harder for Carrie to give Jake a chance.
Carrie Padilla is a widow raising her 8 year old boy on her own after losing her husband in a tragic incident where he was shot by a cop. Due to a history of losing those she loves she vows to never risk her heart again. If she doesn't let herself love a man, then when they leave her (and she's convinced they will), she won't get hurt, right? When an officer shows up with her son and informs her of what he was up to, she starts to realize that her son needs a father figure in his life. She can just be friends with the handsome officer and maybe he can help out with Eric.
Jake's not taking no for an answer, though. He can't stop thinking about her and he wants nothing more than to settle down and start a family with Carrie and Eric. But Carrie fights him most of the way because of her past and she may well lose him since she just can't seem to get past his uniform.
This book is a 4 Handcuffed stars for me. Jake and Carrie's romance was sweet, steamy, and sensual. The relationship between Jake and Eric was heartwarming. I really enjoyed the story. It gets your attention right away. I couldn't put it down. I finished in one day. You get steamy romance, values in life, and relationships in our lives, and HEA. I look forward to reading the next book in this series and other books by Karen Docter.
