A young mother, her two-year-old son killed in the bombing of Berlin in 1945, is consoled when her father replaces the dead child with a foundling from a refugee train who grows up believing himself to be Gregor Liedmann until he reaches his sixties and embarks on a quest to unlock the secrets of his past.
