~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~
WOWEE...So this one turned out to be my favorite of the series so far. I had my reservations at the beginning (see heroine section) but Jessica pulled it off in a spectacular fashion. It was well written. The pace was perfect. The plot was super engaging and kept me guessing until the end. Speaking of that ending...I CANNOT wait to see what this author has in store for us in the finale.
~HERO~
AHSER...I liked Asher's character a lot, but again like the hero from the previous book he was pretty much a BETA hero. I personally prefer my heroes to be ALPHA, but he was a sweet guy, so I found myself not being bothered by that in this book. I loved the whole twist with the “mates” thing. I loved how patient Asher was with Echo. I loved that he was a kicka\(magic boy. I just really enjoyed his character a lot.
~HEROINE~
ECHO...I wasn't sure if I was going to like Echo at the start of this book. She was somewhat bitchy, and I was worried I was going to be getting another utterly unlikable heroine like Lilith from book two. But I was pleasantly surprised that she lost a lot of her bitchiness quite quickly, and she became much more likable as the book went on. Oh, she still had an edge to her, but it was a positive character trait and made her more bada\) and less annoyingly bitchy. I also LOVED that she was a shapeshifter. Very cool addition to the Hero Society family Miz Florence. Echo actually turned out to be a fantastic heroine for me, so yay.
~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~
There were a lot of great secondary characters in this book. All the Hero Society people from previous books. Plus we got a peek at a couple of characters that are VAWRY intriguing, to say the least. I can't wait to see what is up with both Esme and Dorian.
~HEAT LEVEL~
LOW. This was again pretty slow burn in the sex department. We only get a couple sex scenes, but they were both suitably hot. Both the heat level and the frequency felt right for the story, and this couple had good on page chemistry.
~ANGST LEVEL~
LOW. There is some reluctance on Echo's part, to begin with, but she warms up to Asher pretty quickly. They were a solid couple through most of the book. Most of the angst (if you want to call it that) comes from the baddies and the state of the city. There was also no OW or OM drama, and neither were virgins.
~IN THE END~
I LOVED it. It started off a bit rocky for me but it soon found its footing and I was hooked. It was fabulously written. It had twists and turns. It had sweet moments. It had sad moments. It had an excellent plot and a cast of very likable characters. I am excited to see what the final book will bring. Therefore yours truly is going to give this one two HUGE thumbs up.
