On April 26th, 1998, Juan Gerardo, the Bishop and coordinator of the Office of Human Rights of the Archbishopric of Guatemala was beaten to death. This was two days after he had presented a 1600 page report documenting the systematic violations of human rights committed by the Guatemalan army in the fight against insurgency. The investigation by government detectives was farcical, but the real heroes were the young investigators from the Archbishopric's Office of Human Rights, whose investigations led to a landmark trial and convincing sentences. "Goldman is not only a magnificent writer but also a truthful detective" (John Lee Anderson). Winner of the Censorship's Freedom of Expression Prize.
