One of the most highly-regarded writers of this century, Bowen made the short story peculiarly her own. Some of her Irish stories are deemed by Victoria Glendinning -- who was her official biographer and who has written an introduction to this selection -- to be among her greatest. She lived in Ireland and England all her life, and her death in 1973 probably marked the end of the great Anglo-Irish literary tradition.
