In the eighties, a twenty-year-old Houellebecq grabs at random a book of aphorisms by Schopenhauer and has a revelation: he discovered in him a soul mate, an alter ego of the past, a teacher. That fateful day ended up leading to this book, a kind of dialogue between two people separated by time.
