Discovering that I enjoy Carle's collage style more when there's an interplay between foreground subject and background, and when the subject is colourful, rather than one object all one colour, i.e. squirrel on a white background. Multicoloured animals and marine life contrasting with the ocean behind them ae the best of the bunch. I also prefer it when it's his own simple narrative, as opposed to a hodge podge of quoted, albeit multicultural, works: Bible(??), haiku, folk proverbs, nonsensical rhymes and only occasionally original animal-focused poetry.
