Sandor Marai should be known by everyone. He is so, so good. There are so many layers in his books. This one brings Esther and Lajos and when you're almost rooting for their love, you're again faced with another angle as if he would be asking, ‘are you sure? is that all there's to it?' He does that all the time, with all the characters, and it's so beautifully crafted. REal literature, when it sticks with you.
