I just finished Everytime we Say goodbye - book 3 of the Jane Austen Society books, by Natalie Jenner and here are my musings.
Vivien Lowry is a playwright and her latest play opened to thunderous applause from the audience but the critics were not as enthusiastic and as such, the play was closed down, ruining Viviens career with it.
Her last chance is to take a job in Rome fixing someone else's script on a major film. 1955 Italy is beautiful but the post war era and restrictions of the catholic church, makes life very interesting indeed. As Vivien tries to rebuild her future she learns some unsettling truths about the fiance she thought died during the war and the choices she made because of it.
I'm already a big fan of the series, the characters are so charming and the backdrop rich and vibrant. I will stress that every single book in the series stands alone very well. You do not need to have read the first 2 to understand and love this book the way I do.
The book is written with dual POV and a dual timeline and it weaves a delicate tale of trauma and loss with the sweet taste of hope for new beginnings. Vivien is a great MC and you can feel her so vividly that you will be living her life alongside her.
The author has a real talent of drawing you into a world you know nothing about and leaving you full.
4.5 stars.
