~WRITING - PLOT - PACE~
It is no secret that I really enjoyed this author's previous book A COVERT AFFAIR. So I was super excited to find out she was releasing a new book. Furthermore, it will probably come as no surprise that I enjoyed this book just as much as its predecessor. It was quite well written. The pace was very good (for the most part). One of the issues with the previous book was that it was just a bit too long for me. This book was definitely better in that regard, but I still felt that it dragged a little near the beginning. The captivity portion of the book could have been tightened up a bit. I would have preferred maybe a bit more time spent on the aftermath mystery instead. Apart from that little niggle, the plot was quite engaging. There were some good twists and turns (although I DID figure out the baddie from early on lol). Some humor, and some good action. Last, it was all wrapped up in an OK HAPPY FOR NOW ending. I would have loved to have seen a future look epilogue for this couple. But maybe this will be a series, and we will see this couple again in future books?? A very sweet epilogue is going to be included in the final version of the book!
~HERO~
NASH...I enjoyed Nash's character a lot. He was sweet. He was possessive. He was funny. He was a great bother and Uncle. He was a good friend, and he was all about Poppy/Fate. What more can you ask for?
~HEROINE~
FATE...I enjoyed Fate's character as well. She was introverted. She was a geek. She was smart (although she did have a few TSTL moments). She was feisty. My heart broke for her on many occasions, but she showed great strength. I loved her relationship with Mac, and she loved Nash with her whole heart.
~SECONDARY CHARACTERS~
This book was actually pretty light on secondary characters but at the same time had a lot of them (if that makes sense). I LOVED Mac and I would love to see him get his own book. I also quite liked a lot of the guys that worked with Nash at the security firm. Again, it has me wondering if this book could potentially be the start of a series. I also really like Nash's sister and his niece. So there were a lot of great background characters and each of them added some extra depth to the overall story.
~HEAT LEVEL~
LOW. This was a SUPER slow burn with only a couple sex scenes fairly late in the book. As I have mentioned before in my reviews, I am just not a fan of slow burn romances. That said, in this particular case the plot was such that slow was the only believable way to go.
~ANGST LEVEL - SEXUAL HISTORIES~
LOW –> relationship wise. MEDIUM –> plot wise. The subject matter itself was fairly angsty (rape, human trafficking, murder), but the couple themselves were very solid through the majority of the book. Slight pushing away, and a little miscommunication, but other than that there was really no angst. Neither were virgins. Nash didn't appear to be a manwhore, and there was no OW or OM drama.
~IN THE END~
Did I enjoy it? Very much so.
Was it perfect? It had a few small issues, but nothing major.
Would I recommend it? Yes, for sure!
Who would enjoy this book? Readers who like a low angst type of read. Readers that enjoy a well written romantic suspense story. Readers who enjoy a sweet hero, and a feisty, yet still shy heroine.
