Hmm. I need to think about how I want to review this book. It's a good read. A little draggy, but a good read. I loved Lemon. So, can I recommend it? And that is where I stall. Have I read better road trip books? yes. Have I read better books about pregnant teens? Yup. Have I read better books about teens raised by a single mom who are on a mission to meet their dad? Yes and yes. But...have I read a book that is all three at the same time? No.
Here are the facts: I enjoyed it. It's gritty. It loses a star for taking the easy way out (in a way, a second chance is handed to the main character that I felt was very unrealistic in an otherwise realistic story). Also I watched all of the characters grow, and that was great. But, I was unsure of the motivations for all of this growth. I am still confused as to whether or not Stella is a villain or a good guy (and as a single mom I was more than a little confused and unimpressed as to the rational of why this woman moves her daughter across the country constantly).
I was most excited about the San Fran setting and never once really felt like I was there.
I do not mean to sound so negative. It really is a good story.
One thing I LOVED was how awesome Lemon was. The kid gets in trouble, and what does she do? She heads to the library. The author's love of books really shines through. Lately, I have found it depressing that characters in books never seem to read (isn't that odd?) So, yay, Lemon.
Madonia is an author to watch, I feel she is only going to get better.
