It is simple to categorize For The Love of April French as a romance. It is a romance, but it is so much more.
Penny Aimes tackles identity on two fronts: Black with money and what being a Transwoman who cannot pass is like. There is a scene that sticks out for me, Dennis talking about being allowed in an expensive restaurant with all white people because he had on an expensive suit. If he didn't they wouldn't have allowed him in. In that moment April was able to step out of her trans window and see that they share similar stories. That she should be there for him like he is for her. A beautiful moment.
