Adam Colby lost his belief in love when his wife divorced him. While doing his job hosting estate sales, he uncovered something that defied all logic. Postcard poems sent from Gabe Alexander to his wife every Friday for sixty years. Finding these postcards made Adam wonder “what kind of man invests this much time in his marriage?” (prologue, page 3) How could love last so long—for six decades? And where had Adam gone wrong in his own marriage? That's what he hoped to find out as he learned the stories behind the postcard poems in Forever Friday.
Timothy Lewis has woven a great romance around the postcard poems. The characters of Gabe and Pearl, and the way they interact with each other, bring new hope to society in an era that boasts a high divorce rate. The neat thing about this book is it's loosely based on real life, as the author's great-uncle had sent his wife a postcard, each with an original love poem written on it, every Friday for sixty years. This little glimpse into the making of this book seems a bit too good to be true, as truth is often stranger than fiction, but it brings so much more meaning into each chapter of this timeless story.
One of the themes in Forever Friday is grasping hope. This is something that isn't too prevalent in society today, so it's good to see Timothy Lewis bringing it back with his debut book. Even though there are a few bad words, smoking and drinking in this book, it is well worth a read. You may be amazed at the depth of devotion displayed in the long-lived romance spun across the pages. Will you be devoted enough to make your own love story last a lifetime?
