So I'm on a horror kick, obviously, and wanting to read some of the more major horror authors. I'll skip King, since I've read him before. But I'd never read Straub until I read a horror anthology, and I quite enjoyed the short, so I figured I'd give a novel a try.
The short is better.
Not to say this isn't enjoyable. It is. I quite liked some of the characters, and I'm quite glad the focus is on a bunch of old guys; that made it a bit more interesting. And there were moments that were odd and disturbing. I wasn't terribly afraid though, which is always sad. And the prose was a little lacking in places. Ends are always iffy, so I can't fault him there. So it wasn't a great read, but it wasn't half bad either.
But nowhere near as scary as Sadako. Sorry, guys. Japanese creepy girls OWN my fears.
