Lionel Page is a TV reporter who thrives on exposing religious frauds. He's smart, merciless and fearless, and he has a past that he wants to keep buried. When another reporter threatens to expose his past, he is contacted by the mysterious Regina Dunkle who offers to make his problem go away if he applies his talent to a recently discovered manuscript of a story by Edgar Allen Poe. This manuscript tells the story of a person who almost made it to the land of death before being recalled to life.
This assignment takes him to New York where he meets Maddie, who unbeknownst to Lionel, has been given the same assignment by the mysterious Regina Dunkle. Maddie has her own reasons to be beholden to Dunkle; reasons which have something to do with the fact that she is a witch-assassin.
It isn't long before Lionel is initiated into the hidden reality of the world; a reality with goddesses, ghouls, ghosts, and very evil wizards.
This was a very well-written page-turner. The characters of Maddie and Lionel were likable and engaging, although Maddie seemed to be far too caring maternal for a 2,500-year-old witch/assassin. The writing was sharp and I was pulled along by the plot.
I recommend this for fans of urban fantasy, and I will certainly buy the next installment, if there is one.
