Having been raised Anglican, and come out as gay, the strictures of a religious upbringing and expectation resonated deeply with me.
I hugely appreciated how Hasan depicted the turmoil, the secrecy and the fear of retribution. While I've never had to fear for my life, the inner torment is incredibly honest.
The are genuine moments of horror (not gore), as well as incredibly touching moments. Taken against such an oppressively homophobic backdrop helps a western reader to accept it (although looking at the world today it's not too far removed from many experiences 😔 ).
I also greatly valued the ‘gentle' reminders of a country that is still turmoil and wracked by violence. The casual nature with which the characters accepted this reality was unnerving yet totally in keeping with their experience.
The ending wasn't at all what I expected, and rings so true, and with an honesty for the characters as we've met them.
Inspiring - thank you Hasan.
