This book paints a pretty dismal picture of marriage, and of women, and of men, and of all combinations thereof! I'm not saying it intends to do something different than that, but that is what it does.
I don't need likable characters, but both Nick and Amy were so overflowing with animosity toward each other, their friends and family, strangers. I could never really understand or justify the concentrated misery with which they viewed people. Maybe I wasn't supposed to be able to, though? Maybe it's deliberately unnerving? I don't know. I found it somehow both upsetting and underwhelming.
I'm holding out hope that I'll like Sharp Objects more.
