I've read several reviews criticizing this book for fat-shaming and other negative attitudes towards fat people. I don't feel qualified to comment on that aspect of the book. But as a reader I will say that this book is flat out repetitive and boring. Instead of an engaging plot, we get infinite variations of Marley and Georgia bemoaning how their lives would be so much better, they would be so much happier, men would finally pay attention to them - if only they were thinner. Yes, the point of the book is that they have to learn to love themselves for who they are, but the lesson could have been packaged with more interesting subplots and characters. The relationship between Georgia, her troubled teenaged nephew and her hostile brother is intriguing. I would have preferred reading more about those dynamics, and less “I'm fat, my biological clock is ticking, I've got to find a man” whining.
A quick read, but ultimately predictable. With or without the controversy.
