3.5 stars. There was so much to like about this novella - multi-cultural hero and heroine, a hero with a disability who isn't defined by it, characters who actually communicate (even when one of them can't speak) instead of assuming the worst or falling prey to the dreaded Big Misunderstanding. At times the characters' playfulness and bawdy humor reminded me of Kathleen Eagle at her best. I just wish there had been more of it. I felt like several important scenes were left on the cutting room floor that kept me from becoming totally engaged in the story. Also, while I appreciated the fact that Rey didn't wallow in grief and pity after he became a double amputee, it felt unrealistic that he wouldn't have needed to mourn what he had lost at least a little bit before he was ready to move on with the new normal of his life.
The author states in the epilogue that she is considering a sequel and there is definitely lots more to learn about these two interesting characters.
