I read this after listening to Barnes narration of Hemingway's Homage to Switzerland.
Homage to Hemingway follows the same triptych format, however with in this book the three principal characters are indeed the same man, whereas Hemingway leaves it ambiguous.
Each of the three stories commences with a similar set - a table, at which our main character sits, with students, discussing literature with students. That each table is in a different country, and our main character is at a different stage of his career leads us to a different story.
In this book, Barnes also features a Hemingway anecdote, further justifying his title with respect to homage.
