This book is told in two different timelines that alternative chapters. This actually made it annoying because the past chapters bring tension and mystery while the present chapters are boring– or at least seem even more so because of the tension from the other chapters. End of chapter 5 (present time) is when we discover the scene of the crime, but the interaction between... all the characters really, is so annoying that I'm not even impressed. Trickle of blood dripping onto the carpet doesn't seem as impressive as the little snippets from Frances life with the framing of the murder prophecy, her friend going missing, death threats– like seriously? I'm supposed to care about untoasted white bread Annie? Really?
To be fair though, chapter 7 is somewhat interesting but also seems... messy? There is tension with inheritance and yet Frances' nephew is going to be the one autopsying her to determine if she was murdered? Sounds like a conflict of interest, tbh. And chapter 8 makes it feel like this is going to be cozy mystery-ish with the incompetent or unwilling to help police so the amateur detective has to solve the case and idk nothing feels right.
