3.5 rounded down to a 3. Note: the author's Q&A at the end is worth reading as she explains how she came to write this story and the work that led her to write it.
I loved Gemma as she is a strong and determined young woman. I couldn't imagine how hard it must be for someone with her disability. To be unable to communicate to those I love and saw were in danger would be horrifying.
However, as much as I loved her character the book itself just didn't vibe with me. Most of it was buildup and the end was solved in a couple of pages. I felt the ending was really rushed. I picked this one up because I loved the premise and was looking forward to the mystery, but (for me) it fell flat.
The writing is very simplistic in style I think this is more of a middle school read than YA. Had it been marketed that way I more than likely would have rated higher.
