This is a very thorough book, written by the wife of a Canadian Geologist who is on an invitational tour through India. In each of their stops, there are lectures and discussions, but also arranged visits to the monuments and sights. They cover a lot of the country, visiting many cities.
The book is, as might be expected, very science-focussed (perhaps even geology-focussed), but is quite readable. It references the problems, or perceived problems of India, from a scientific, and educational perspective, but also touches on the influences of politics and culture on science.
It is by no means a simple travelogue. While the author is the wife of eh scientist, it is still technically focussed, and in depth. It is not a quick read, or a skim-over-read. A brief lack of concentration results in confusion, and a return to the previous page to pick up the thread of the narrative again.
For those with an interest in the sciences, it will make for an accurate snapshot in time (1964) with regard to the sciences in India. For those in the know, there are probably a number of important Indian scientists mentioned.
A solid 3 stars.
