Just finished the second chapter. Prelude was a bit slow, with tangents based on streets and buildings that make Lord of the Rings look like child's play, but with little gems and hints of what is to come. Once we get to Book One things start to be a bit easier to read. You can definitely tell a graphic novelist wrote this, with the level of visual detail that happens at times in the writing. Can be a little dense but is very rich and vivid. The starkly different voices in each chapter or section so far are also really cool; each character's pov actually feels like a different person with very individual vibes. The inner dialogues for Ern and Marla also both have a real rough, almost grimy but incredibly human feel to them that I feel really fits the "tale of everything, told from a vanished gutter" approach. I think the bit with the angel vision at the end of the A Host of Angels chapter has been my favorite part so far. Been enjoying this quite a lot. Trying to savor it and not go through it faster than it should be read.
