Two very different women are linked by destiny and the struggle for the English crown. Matilda, daughter of Henry I, is determined to win back her crown from Stephen, the usurper king. Adeliza, Henry's widowed queen and Matilda's stepmother, is now married to William D'Albini, a warrior of the opposition. Both women are strong and prepared to stand firm for what they know is right. But in a world where a man's word is law, how can Adeliza obey her husband while supporting Matilda, the rightful queen? And for Matilda pride comes before a fall ...What price for a crown? What does it cost to be 'Lady of the English'? (less)

I love the cover, well both of them - the green UK and the red US - as I feel that it truly portrays Empress Matilda. Again as I'm finding with all Elizabeth Chadwick it is a portion of history that I have never really known and want to delve further in and I find that these fiction novels are just the way to do it for me. I love how she really goes for most likely accurate portrayals. Her novels bring it all alive. I can really see what she's drawing an imagery of and even hear things such as the wind flapping the walls of the tents.
I do have to admit that as a person I did not quite like Matilda, but then that's not really the point. I could visualize her and follow her story and that I did love. I cannot wait for more from Chadwick in the future.
