They have called him the Jean Genet of New Journalism: In this book we see him surrounded by and living with the Hells Angels, the motorcycle gang who leave terror in their wake. Thompson travelled with them for quite some time, and lived to tell the tale: Drunken blow outs, an abundance of drugs, horrific fights, harassment and paranoia of locals, and acid parties with Ken Keseys Merry Pranksters. The method that Hunter S. Thompson used to write has been described as Gonzo Journalism, in which the reporter is not an inert observer but an involved participant.
