I received this book through a Goodreads giveaway, but all thoughts are my own
Stars: 3.5ish
I have such mixed feelings about this book. On one hand I was really starting to like it.
I like MJ. I think she is a great character with great support from her friends. I don't absolutely believe her children exist, but I'm sure there are wonderful teens like that out in the world. I love how she was independent and knew what she wanted.
What I didn't like was her husband. I still don't. I don't like their relationship because it seemed too dependent on the man's ego. I hate the double standard where she waited 3 hours on their anniversary for him yet, He didn't wait more than 30 minutes for her???
I disliked how MJ got swept away in things and how she didn't feel like she could honestly talk with her own husband without him shutting down, seriously??? Give guys more respect than that... and if you can't be open and honest in a relationship then wth is the point in being together? I'm not blaming Chris completely though, MJ took being ‘independent' to the next level at times... you don't fix a marriage alone– it is a two-way street.
But, I thought it was a good read. I like cards and while not a huge fan of poker, I have an oddly nostalgic feeling towards it from playing it with my family as a teen. I think the cover of the book is beautiful too, by the way. I love the bright colors!
This is a book that takes place over a long period of time... some times the times didn't make much sense (Are you telling me nothing romantic or no romantic plan could be made for Christmas or New Years???), but ignoring that (and many other obvious hints to where the story was going) i was a nice read. Something different from the usual stuff I read.
...The more I write the more I realize how much I dislike about this book.... well, let's say the recipe in the back gives that extra .5 star.
Recommend to: people who read chick-lit, and poker.
