What a strong debut novel. In some ways this does feel like a collection of short stories, and further the story gets, the more the chapters are vignettes instead of actual stories, but the whole arc is still very impressive – a rather condensed history of the West African slave trade and the way the slavery influenced the race relations in ways that still remain in the US. I don't think you can do much better than this in less than 400 pages.
