This novel is more of a short story collection, but I suppose the stories are coherent enough and follow a common timeline, so you can call this a novel as well... Anyway, the first half tells of life of a preteen girl in a Zimbabwe shantytown, the second half is about her life as a teen in Detroit. The first half was more interesting, but the second wasn't bad, either. Darling, the protagonist, is a colourful and interesting character, and this was interesting compared to the slightly older African literature I've been reading (Ngugi wa Thiong'o, for example).
