Not quite as memorable as I'd hoped it would be, likely because unlike Suzy Hansen I never had many illusions about American exceptionalism. I thought the strongest part of the book was the historical recounting of the devastating US involvement in so many countries after WWII - I was familiar with some of the information, but woefully ignorant about Turkey and Greece. And shocked to find out that the CIA played a role in the founding of such august literary treasures as the Kenyon Review and the Iowa Writers Workshop!
Interesting book to read at the end of a disastrous year for America - if we caused so much damage with allegedly smart, relatively stable individuals in positions of leadership, how much more chaos will result from the current administration?
