One woman who loves two people suddenly dies leaving behind truths and lies for her loved ones to sort through while dealing with her death.
Jules Kanter is a wife, mother, and a journalist in love with her husband and her female lover, Erin. After Jules' death, her husband Will, finds out about Erin while going through Jules phone and confronts her. As Erin and Will deal with the fallout of Jules death and their feelings of anger, loss, betrayal, and pain, Jamie Klinger-Krebs takes us through each of their relationships with Jules - the good, the bad, and the ugly. We get to see through Will's eyes what his relationship was with Jules and how their marriage got to the point where Jules strayed. We also get to see Erin's point of view of falling in love with a woman she cannot have. Then we get to see Jules point of view through her writings and her realization of not being straight and coming to terms with her own sexuality.
This novel is about the growth of all of the individuals involved. This story involves rape, drug use, alcohol abuse, suicide, and depression. Yet for all of these dark topics, I was never triggered or drowned in that darkness. I am not quite sure how Klinger-Krebs did it, but On Burning Mirrors let's us as readers see their stories without drowning in them. The book does not promote adultery, but it does continuously promote being your best self and being able to look into that mirror and accepting yourself which is what Jules was trying to do if not for herself but for her daughter. Jules says at one point that falling in love taught her that she had to be true to herself and show her daughter that same path. I am not usually one to recommend a book about adultery, but I could not put this book down because this book is not about that - it is each person finding himself and I got to witness Jules, Erin, and Will's journey.
