i was really excited once i read the premise of this book. romeo & juliet retelling + mafia families + modern magic? say no more, you got me to read.
and while i did enjoy this book, it kept me entertained enough to read until the end...it wasn't everything i hoped it would be. honestly the magic, besides one or two key events, was mostly inconsequential in the end, which was disappointing to me because it was what i looked forward to most in the book. besides those one or two events, all the magic in the book could've been replaced with guns or certain drugs that gangsters could get their hands on and the results would've been the same.
there were a LOT of characters in this book, even though the book only focuses on a few. there honestly didn't need to be that many sisters included when only 2 were actually used in the plot. there were also two sets of romeos & julliettes, which made things a bit confusing at times. the titles for the kingpins were absolutely badass though.
I'll still keep this vague in terms of characters, but i really didn't like all the deaths and resurrections in this book. killing one character and bringing them back to life is fine, but killing multiple and bringing them ALL back just cheapens the impact of any death in the story. it lowered the stakes for me immensely
all in all, it wasn't a bad story but i felt like it could've been much better. didn't go up to my expectations when i first heard the premise.
