Film studies student Jonathan Gates becomes obsessed with silent screen (and later) horror film maker Max Castle who mysteriously disappeared in the 1940's at the height of his talent. Gates looks for the truth behind his disappearance and in the process, the world of film takes on a more sinister appearance and his investigation leads him well beyond the world of Hollywood.
