"I'll never belong anywhere like I belong with you."

What it's about:Set with an alternating timeline covering the present day and the course of ten summer trips (moving toward the present summer) taken by friends Poppy & Alex, as they navigate the changes in their lives and feelings towards each other.

“Being together was as easy and natural as being alone, without any of the loneliness.”

What I thought:

  • I have a personal soft spot for friends-to-lovers (since that's what my own love story is) and I feel this was a very well done depiction of how that feels and plays out, in my experience. Indeed, I definitely saw glimpses of my own relationship in this book, which has probably biased me towards it.
  • The slow burn is A+.
  • It's a very introspective and reflective read, giving the novel a somewhat slow pace, especially as the timelines alternate.
  • Beautifully written prose, the kind I just want to be wrapped up in.
  • As with other Emily Henry novels, I like how characters are called on their shit and make the effort to improve and become emotionally available for the relationship.
  • I also appreciated how the third act conflict is not drawn from a miscommunication which could have been easily solved by just talking, as so many romance books seem to be.

“It's not your job to make me happy, okay? I'm happy just because you exist, and that's as much of my happiness as you have control over.”
