Last year I became obsessed with the idea of Dolly Freed. I read the long-form article, I watched all of the Youtube videos, interviews, etc. I managed to score a copy of Possum Living and then it sat on my Kindle until now.
Holy cow. What really strikes you as you read this is not the content, sure that is interesting too, but her voice. Dolly is one-of-a-kind. It's almost impossible to believe she was 18 years old when she wrote this. Some of her opinions seem more like her father's opinions that she is regurgitating here, but one can feel how strong her beliefs are and can (IMHO) get on board. Maybe. I'm a little more about balance.
Is the information still useful? Maybe, I'm not about to go out and trap turtles to make soup, but that is beside the point. Are the ideas still useful? Yes, yes, yes. Self-reliance, DIY, self-education, and freedom are ideas that have not aged. It's actually how we roll at my house. Something breaks? Research how to fix it. Attempt to fix it. Is it fixed? Yes? Awesome. No? Research and try again.
This is true grit.
Honestly, this is what I was looking for every time I pick up one of the back to nature books. This is what I wanted. The advice delivered as if the writer and I were just chatting over tea at the table.
I'm so glad I finally got to read this.
