Every rebel needs a cause—and a woman to believe in. Discover why Heidi McLaughlin raves that “the sexy, alluring bad boys of the True Brothers MC will make your mouth water” in this smoldering novel from the author of Ruthless. The black-leather-clad biker who just roared up on his Harley doesn’t resemble any single father Emily Clark has ever known. But as she watches “Reb” bonding with his son, Emily realizes there’s a lot more to this bad boy than his alpha-male attitude or his sinful good looks. And when Reb takes an interest in her, there’s no way she can resist his surprisingly tender touch. The one thing Emily won’t give up is her hard-won independence. As president of the True Brothers MC, Reb owes a sacred debt of loyalty to the club, but his first priority is making sure that his son grows up right. Pursuing an unexpected affair with Emily is a close second. Then a violent stalker threatens her life, and this unconventional guardian angel really turns up the heat. Nobody messes with Reb, or anyone under his protection. Trouble is, how’s he supposed to defend Emily when she insists on going it alone? He’s willing to put his life on the line for her. Now, maybe, he needs to open his heart. All Emily Clark wants to do when she gets home from work is pop a couple pills to help with her headache and relax in front of the TV. Unfortunately life has other plans for her when she finds a neighbor's son sitting on the front steps of their building with a bag of junk food. Knowing Tucker doesn't have the best mother and wanting to avoid calling the cops and having Tucker go into foster care, they set out to find Tucker's dad. This leads Emily to the True Brothers MC clubhouse and REB, Tucker's dad and Prez of the club. One look at the big bad biker has Emily feeling ALL sorts of things she shouldn't. Will the innocent librarian be be able to stay away from the big bad wolf of a biker, and will the said big bad biker let her run?
When I requested this I wasn't aware this was book two of a series. In anycase, I wasn't lost in the least and can safely say that this could be read as a standalone. I really enjoyed this one. It sort of falls in between “gritty” and “MC fluff” These guys are not really nice guys, They do bad shit and they don't make excuses for it. Club business is none of their old ladies business and they straight up let them know that. If you are looking for a fluffy bunny biker, then this book isn't for you. That said, these guys are loyal and love HARD.
I found both characters to be really likable. Emily comes with a lot of baggage, and because of that I forgave her some of the back and forth behavior she had going on. There wasn't really any pushing away per se. More her taking a break to figure things out. For most of the book Reb is actually married, but had kicked his bitch of a wife out a year previously. She is just using custody of Tucker to drag things out. At some points I would get a sore neck at the whiplash inner feelings Reb had. This is a very insta-lust book and Reb is all “mine” from word go most of the book. At times though his inner thoughts were not exactly running along the same lines. At points he would say “he's never letting her go” and then in his thoughts he would say “he'll protect her as long as this lasts” It wasn't over the top annoying, but distracting enough that I noticed it.
I was also confused about their first meeting. It reads like these are two people who JUST meet each other for the first time. Later in the book though you find out that they ALREADY know each other having had some interaction a year previously when the Emily's BFF (heroine from book one) was in the hospital. This confused me to be honest. I would think that we would have gotten some indication during their meeting at the beginning that they at least knew OF each other. In anycase, that was just a small issue in an otherwise really entertaining read.
Overall I really enjoyed this one. It had a few minor problems, and I wished it had a better epilogue, but I assume we'll hear more from this couple in upcoming books. Two thubs up from yours truly...
