Road to the Pyrenees

A short travel book from an English author travelling around the (mostly) French Basque Country. I say mostly, as he passed briefly into Spanish Basque Country.
Higham set out on a primarily walking holiday, and despite an injury, still covered a lot of ground by foot, but was at times forced to accept rides as a hitchhiker. This wasn't an issue for the narrative, and allowed him some more interaction time with the drivers.

While it was a short book, and the narrative moved along with reasonable pace, making it quite readable, I can't help but think it would be better suited for readers with a more rounded background in the history and politics of the area - or perhaps I mean more history and Royal histories. There is a lot about these things - related to each of the Basque territories - and while it is probably well explained that sort of history just washes over me without a high level of understanding.

I did enjoy his interactions with various people - most very hospitable, some funny, some odd, but nevertheless Higham did a good job narrating those conversations and interactions.

Worth a read for those interested in the area or who just enjoy a history rich travel narrative.
