In the blink of an eye, Mela McKinley loses one of the most important people in her life. While lying in the hospital in shock and fighting her grief Mela's MIL threatens to take her last remaining light from her. Scared and desperate Mela calls her twin sister and together with the help of her sister's boyfriend ROCK and his MC they devise a plan that sends Mela and her son into hiding.
Four years later in the middle of a blizzard, a man stumbles towards her and Beck's refuge. Thinking her past has finally caught up to them Mela is prepared to do anything to protect herself and her son. But Jackson Winslow is sick and as much as Mela wants him gone her nurturing side takes over as she nurses him back to health.
As these two grow closer Mela's walls start to fall but Jackson is keeping secrets and when those secrets come out he could very well lose the two people who have come to mean the world to him.
OMGosh...this book. I had NO idea what I was getting into with this one. I've never read this author before but the blurb sounded interesting and the cover caught my eye, so I thought “WHY NOT?”
This book hits you right in the feels straight out of the gate. My heart broke for Mela on SO many levels. I was already tearing up two chapters in! This was an amazingly well-written book. The pace meanders along slowly and surely peeling back the layers that added a nice bit of suspense to the story. The characters were interesting and engaging.
As I said my heart went out to Mela. At first, she seemed so fragile, but her tragedy shaped her into a strong and capable woman. Jackson had his own scars and for most of the book, he is shrouded in mystery. I liked that even though we don't know what exactly he is hiding, we do get chapters from his POV that helps to connect us to him as a character. His relationship with Beck was a highlight of this book as well.
We also get some interesting side characters. I'd LOVE to read more about Ari/Rock and their MC. As well as Jackson's BFF Dalton. All wrapped up with a nice epilogue that was like the cherry on top of this wonderful book sundae. Two HUGE thumbs up from yours truly.
