Phoenix Smith, a wounded ex-spy, returns to her hometown in rural Missouri to recuperate. After her arrival she finds her lifelong friend, Annalynn Keyser, mourning her husband's death. Everyone except Annalynn believes that her husband shot his mistress and then himself. She pleads for Phoenix's help in proving her husband innocent and to identify his killer.
