In 1992, Lydia Bird single-handedly sailed her 42-foot sailboat from Chesapeake Bay across the Atlantic Ocean and through the Mediterranean Sea. She is joined for short periods in the Mediterranean by three friends, visits her parents, and reflects upon her role as an adult daughter, a wife of a U.S. diplomat, a friend, and a citizen of the world.
