There's a lot to love about Starter Villain. It's a book about a man who inherits his Uncle's empire, and the banal side of being a villain. It's John Wick but about the admin staff doing paperwork instead of assassins. Cats work in management, the dolphins are unionizing, and there's a lair in a volcano. All accoutrements that were fun and intriguing enough to finish the book.
The writing reminded me of Andy Weir, which some people love but it continues to be something I do not enjoy. Every line being a quip made it feel contrived and a little too middle-aged comedian trying to be funny and relevant on a panel show to hit right. I did have a chuckle or two though.
If I had read the book in one sitting, the tone and humor would've been okay. But reading this over a week or so meant I had to keep switching back to a flavor of humor that I struggle with.
