Summary of Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire

I lay down on the dusty floor and lit the pilot on the butane heater. #3 I stood in the middle of the world, God’s navel, Abbey’s country, the red wasteland. The air was dry and clear, and the view was open and perfect in all directions except to the west where the ground rose up. #4 The Arches are natural arches that were formed through the weathering of the sandstone walls in which they are found. They range in size from holes just big enough to walk through to openings large enough to contain the dome of the Capitol building in Washington, D. C.
