This is based on actual people who lived and loved in 1778. Footnotes show interesting historical facts, and the final footnote shows what happened to the people and the house afterward.
The main thing I didn't care for, other than the few swears included, was that several times the author made comments that showed his cynicism toward women: “Secrets? The very word is a charm to women”—”It was like a woman to alight first on the most absurd possibility the situation could imply”—etc, etc. None of the generalizations were accurate or kind.
