The Existence of Amy is such an insightful read. I think it gives a very accurate view on anxiety, OCD and depression. At times, Amy's hurt really broke my heart. Amy is a woman that has to go through so much mental hurt, and that doesn't leave the reader unaffected. Amy keeps her mental hurt a secret to the people around her, and goes through them all alone. You can clearly see her fighting for help throughout the story, but her OCD, depression and anxiety keep her from seeking help. She had to battle her own thoughts everyday, every minute, every second.
The underlying message of this book is really important: a good support system is so so important. This story was touching and heartbreaking, and it left me thinking about life for a while after reading it.
Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy. This did not affect my opinion in any way.
Amy does her best. She tries to engage, to get up every day, and just deal with life. Sometimes though, there is darkness and a sort of fluid motion that she can't escape from. When she “wakes” later it's usually to voices belittling her for failing yet again ...
What a beautiful, heartbreaking and endearing read. If ever there was a book that shows how much a little kindness and awareness of the people around us is needed, this is it.
Too often, people are in a hurry. They hurry with work, with relationships, and with life in general. Also, too often they don't see past themselves, and make assumptions about others' attitudes and behaviors. Sally was this person in this book and boy did I want to smack her sideways. The author did a great job with her character.
Amy is such a loveable and vulnerable character. My heart was with her every step of her journey. By the end of this one, I was in tears. Tears for her struggles. Tears for her happiness, and tears for Nathan being a friend and not taking “I'm fine” and “No” for an answer. This is one I won't forget anytime soon.
I sincerely appreciate the publisher for providing me with a review copy. All opinions expressed herein are mine and mine alone.
