It's a good match between framework/tone and subject matter: hard-boiled detective noir and the clandestine, tension-filled, back-stabbing, corrupt McCarthy era in Hollywood. I have not read up on non-fiction sources, but based on the foreword, I trust the author to be providing an authentic fictionalized account of the kind of events occurring at the time. Which leads into my overall impression: dark! It's compelling and repellant in equal measure, and because I am often spoiled by lushly illustrated graphic novels, the very sketchy style has a similar push/pull quality: you need to pay attention to figure out what's going on, but the art is very much secondary to the text, though it helps establish the mood.
It is the last book in a trilogy, but having not known that until after I started reading it, I think I can say it presents as a whole story on its own.
