Francis A. Schaeffer explores the essence of true Christian living and ministry. The work is a profound reflection on the nature of Christian faith, going beyond mere doctrinal correctness and moral uprightness to emphasize a deeper, more personal relationship with Christ. Schaeffer argues that real Christianity is not just about having the right beliefs or living a morally upright life. It is about a genuine, humble relationship with Christ, recognizing our dependence on Him. He underscores the necessity of a living faith that constantly looks to Jesus as the source of all vitality and purpose.
The Three Concentric Circles of Christian Life - Schaeffer introduces a model comprising three concentric circles:
Outer Circle: Correct theological positions and biblical orthodoxy.
Middle Circle: Intellectual training and comprehension of contemporary issues.
Inner Circle: A humble heart, a love for God, and a holy life.
He emphasizes that all three are crucial but must be kept in proper balance, with the innermost circle being the relationship with God that informs and transforms the other two.
According to Schaeffer, leadership in Christianity is about servanthood rather than power. He stresses that true ministers are called to serve humbly, following the example of Jesus who washed His disciples' feet. Leadership should not be about ego or authority but about serving others in humility.
I have taken extensive notes and found many profound quotes in this small yet impactful book. One of my favourite passages states, “But if a Christian is consecrated, does this mean he will be in a big place instead of a little place? The answer, the next step, is very important: as there are no little people in God's sight, so there are no little places. To be wholly committed to God in the place where God wants him—this is the creature glorified. “
