Perys Tremayne is not readily accepted by his family in Heligan, Cornwall, due to the scandal his late parents caused, but neither does he fit in with the servants. Only a neighbouring farmer's daughter, Annie, and her brother will befriend him. As war threatens, Annie promises herself to another.
